Keep Your Toddler Safe From The Summer Sun

 In Fun

Summer is finally here in all of its fun-filled glory – and children are beyond excited!

While your toddler can’t wait to go outdoors to enjoy themselves, you as a parent have to worry about a whole other beast: sun damage.

As much as you want your child to enjoy some fun time under the sun, you also want them to be protected every step of the way. Fortunately, we’ve got a list of things you can do to keep your toddler safe from harmful rays:

Avoid The Sunniest Times Of The Day

The best way to deal with a problem is to avoid it – so avoid letting your children out for long periods of time during peak sun hours. This is usually between 11 AM and 3 PM, where UV rays are at their strongest.

In case you can’t adjust your outings for before 11 AM or after 3 PM, make sure you provide your child adequate shade. It’s best practice to take your own umbrella or pop-up tent so that your little one can stay protected even in the most extreme sun rays. Make sure they are protected with proper clothing, caps, light shoes, and the like.

Use The Right Sunscreen

Sunscreen with SPF 30 or more should be a ritual for every parent and child; it will help block out UV rays the most effectively, so that your little one doesn’t store up sun damage while having some fun.

However, the right kind of sunscreen should be chosen carefully; make sure the ingredients don’t include anything that’s either too harsh or something your child might be allergic to. Mineral sunscreens are the better option for children because it has less chemicals, which won’t seep through their sensitive skins. Keep on re-applying so that their layer of protection never vanishes.

Protect The Eyes

UV rays damage more than just the skin – they can also potentially harm the eyes. Without proper precautions, too much exposure can cause long-term problems like damaged cornea, or even cataracts. That’s why it’s important that you make your child wear sunglasses if they’re going to be out in the sun for long periods of time. Make it fun by letting them choose their favorite color or design!

What Can Your Little One Do?

The best thing your child can do to stay safe from the sun is to learn these precautions! When you’re applying sunscreen on their arms and legs, or when you’re making them wear their protective caps, make sure to tell them why you’re doing it: so that they can be protected.

This doesn’t have to be a harrowing lesson of how UV rays can damage hair, skin and eyes! Make it fun by teaching them ways to protect during summertime, without missing out on playtime. Nurseries in JLT do a great job at teaching such important lessons, but Oakfield Early Learning Centre has its own innovative approach. Over there, children get to learn vital self-care lessons through fun-filled play and group activities, so that they enjoy the learning experience.

In the end, the message should be crystal clear: safety always comes first!
